The Transplant Process
THE TRANSPLANT PROCESS STARTS HERE...AT A WEEKLY MEETING OF THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER TRANSPLANT TEAM. THIS GROUP EXAMINES EVERY PATIENT, ASSESSING THEIR OVERALL HEALTH. LAURA MURDOCK IS THE DIRECTOR OF THE OSU MEDICAL CENTER COMPREHENSIVE TRANSPLANT CENTER. THE WORD COMPREHENSIVE IS IMPORTANT, BECAUSE THIS MEDICAL TEAM LOOKS AT EVERY ASPECT OF A PATIENT BEFORE DECIDING WHO IS BEST SUITED FOR A TRANSPLANT. IT'S A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE COMPRISED OF PHYSICANS, SURGEONS, TRANSPLANT PSYCHOLOGISTS, TRANSPLANT SOCIAL WORKERS, TRANSPLANT COORDINATORS, TRANSPLANT DIETICIANS, TRANSPLANT PHARMACISTS...IT'S A VERY ROBUST COMMITTEE—AND THEY'LL TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THE WHOLE PICTURE OF THE PATIENT. THEN THEY'LL REALLY ASSESS, IS TRANSPLANT THE BEST FOR THIS PATIENT? BECAUSE WE WOULDN'T BE GOOD STEWARDS OF THE ORGAN, AND WE WOUDN'T BE GOOD STEWARDS TO THE PATIENT IF WE ARE SETTING THEM UP FOR FAILURE. ONCE EVERYONE IS IN AGREEMENT ON WHO ARE THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR TRANSPLANT, THE PATIENTS FROM THE OSU MEDICAL CENTER ARE ENTERED INTO THE NATIONAL DATA BASE maintained by the United Network of Organ Sharing. EVERYONE IN THE UNITED STATES IN NEED OF AN ORGAN TRANSPLANT IS RANKED ACCORDING TO NEED. WHILE THE DOCTORS AT OSU MEDICAL CENTER WAIT FOR ORGANS FOR THEIR PATIENTS, DORIE DILLS, CHIEF CLINICAL EXECUTIVE WITH LIFELINE OF OHIO ORGAN PROCUREMENT, and her staff facilitate the process which enables people to donate organs at the time of their death. IDF Budget to Focus on Land Warfare
IDF Budget to Focus on Land Warfare
In a Monday meeting of the IDF General Staff, Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi approved the army's five year budget which includes a substantial increase in spending on the ground forces, the first of its kind in years. The budget plan reflected many of the lessons learned from last summer's Second Lebanon War, including the procurement of hundreds of heavily-armored personnel carriers, based on the Merkava Tank, so that ground troops may maneuver with greater ease and protection. The increased funding for ground forces will partially come at the expense of the Israel Air Force, and US military aid will be crucial. Israel will continue to produce Merkava Mark 4 tanks and equip them with active defense systems against anti-tank missiles, which dealt the Armored Corps painful blows during the war. Despite the said hike in the allocation of funds for the ground forces, the Air Force is slated to procure F-35 stealth fighters, and the Navy is set to acquire anti-missile defense systems and multi-purpose battleships. 09/04/07
